Arctic Art Institute started in 2014 by a group of young artists and curators born and raised in Euro-Arctic Russia and educated in Oslo, St. Petersburg and London. Since then, the AAI has been an incubator for creative expression of the young artists in the North aimed at visibility and empowerment, as well as creating meeting places with their international colleagues for discussions about memory, silenced heritage, decolonization, climate change and ecofeminist liberation.

The collective has curated four editions of the Arctic Art Forum, an international platform for independent Northern voices in arts and culture: Embodied knowledge (2016), Slow culture (2017), Maps of meaning (2018), Ecosystems of the invisible (2020) where mutual learning and care, development of the existing ecosystems of the creatives were central.

Arctic Art Institute has had multiple collaborative projects with institutions around all the Arctic region and beyond, such as Pikene på Broen, the University of Lapland, Anchorage Museum, Northern Norwegian Center for Design and Architecture, Kurant gallery, Arctic Arts Summit, Arctic Design School, Garage Museum of Contemporary art, Russian Art Archive Network, etc.

After 24 February 2022, it's a nomadic research and curatorial platform with the same goals of making Northern artistic voices heard.
